Please forgive me if I wasn't supposed to copy and paste the entire thing. Apple doesn't make a USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter, so you won't be able to connect a 2016 or later MacBook Pro to the old Apple Cinema Display, or any other monitor that uses a Mini Display Port.
Try posting the log of the error - can be found in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReportsĪlso try running the machine in Safe Mode to see if it still happens. Would tend to agree with chscag's assessment, that running the external monitor is just exacerbating the issue.

If number 1 - is typically hardware, although it can be software related. If number 2 - almost always a hardware issue, though I have seen some bad applications do it on rare occasions. If number 3 - that is a typical overheating issue and my first question would be, what is the computer sitting on when you have it connected to the TV? Opening a whole bunch of applications by itself would not cause any of the above.
